History

The History category is intended to give a brief overview of various aspects of Canadian military history from 1900 to 2000. There are several key components of this category:

  • Years in Review - a brief overview of the Canadian Army for a single year, including a listing of senior commanders, description of annual training and equipment changes, unit listings, as well as figures regarding numbers, types of employment (field forces, UN missions, etc.).

  • Campaigns - an overview of the Canadian Army's participation in major conflicts, sub-categorized into distinct phases.

  • Battle Honours - a description of each Battle Honour granted to units of the Canadian Army, and a means of providing a detailed view of the actions that made up the campaigns of the major conflicts described above.

  • Operations - a more detailed look at background and planning of the battles and campaigns described above.

  • Domestic Missions - an overview of Canadian operations within its own national borders.

  • International Missions - an overview of missions abroad outside the United Nations peacekeeping purview.

  • Peacekeeping - an overview of UN peacekeeping and observer missions.

  • Wars - an overview of the conflicts in which Canada has been a full-fledged combatant.

A major focus of the History section is in context. While many internet sites offer dribs and drabs of information on various battles, few provide the context in which the battles occurred. Many sites simply regurgitate pat descriptions of actions, un-cited, and without accompanying maps to orient the reader. Cited material on other sites sometimes come from dubious sources, which are either inaccurate or else overly celebratory. The articles presented in this category will hopefully redress some of these problems. Organization into clear categories with "battle boxes" able to group and link to related campaign material will also help accomplish this.

Battles

U.S. Army historian Charles B. MacDonald noted how the definition of what a "battle" was had shifted during the 20th Century:

Tidy, well-contained battles like Leuthen or Austerlitz, Gettysburg or Sedan, went out of style with the coming of World War I. The new concepts of tremendous masses of men and long, continuous front lines saw to that. Now the very meaning of the term battle was open to revision; for as both the number of combatants and the battlefield area increased the climactic element that heretofore had characterized battles was often missing. There might still be well-defined, short-lived, decisive combats like the Battle of the Masurian Lakes or the First Battle of the Marne, but there might also be bloody, lengthy, inconclusive struggles like the First and Second Battles of the Somme and like Passchendaele. No matter that they stretched over great periods of time and that a climax was missing. They qualified as battles nonetheless: series of engagements fought for a common objective, occurring over common terrain and under common battlefield conditions.1
