Armoured Regiments 1940-1963

This is a listing of armoured regiments from 1940 to 31 Dec 1963. Until 1941, "tank" regiments belonged to the Infantry. The Second World War saw a hasty conversion of both cavalry and infantry regiments into armoured regiments equipped with tanks. By the end of the war, horses were no longer utilized by the Canadian Army, and the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps had fully established itself as a worthy successor to the Cavalry. The Canadian Armoured Corps was created 13 August 1940 and given the Royal designation on 2 August 1945.

Expansion of armoured forces during the Second World War was extensive; see also the complete listing of Canadian Armoured Corps Units in the Second World War.
