4th Hussars of Canada

4th Hussars of Canada was a regiment of the Militia that served during the 20th Century as a cavalry regiment.

Lineage

  • 4th Provisional Regiment of Cavalry formed on 30 April 1875 from four independent troops

  • Redesignated 4th Regiment of Cavalry circa May 1866

  • Redesignated 4th Hussars 22 July 1892

  • Redesignated 4th Hussars of Canada 1 March 1932

  • 15 December 1936: amalgamated with Princess Louise Dragoon Guards to form 4th Princess Louise Dragoon Guards

History

During the First World War, details of the 4th Hussars were called out for  local protective duty on 6 August 1914. The 4th Hussars contributed volunteers to the 8th Regiment, Canadian Mounted Rifles, CEF, which was eventually broken up for reinforcements.

Insignia

Mazes illustrates  two patters of cap badge for the 4th Hussars, noting approval of the pattern by General Order 37 of 1910, with mirrored collar badges (with horses looking inwards when placed on the uniform). Officers badges were larger than other ranks' badges, and the collar badges were miniature versions of the cap badge. Shoulder badges consisted simply of an Arabic numeral "4".

Other Ranks' collar badge

When the suffix "of Canada" was added to the regimental designation, the pattern of the badge changed, notably the scroll but also the horse went from a side view to a forward-facing image. The new design was approved by General Order 31 of 1931 and was a bit-metal design. Collar badges replaced the horse with a Roman numeral IV. A new shoulder badge design was also approved consisting of two curved arcs reading IV / HUSSARS.
